A Few Simple Suggestions for How to Maintain Batteries in Electric Golf Carts

First, please note that a charge gauge should be installed on all electric golf carts.  A charge gauge is a vital tool for monitoring and maintaining the health of your equipment.  Charge gauge installation is available through the Power Equipment Solutions service department.  Please contact us or visit our interactive scheduling page to make an appointment.

To receive the maximum life from golf cart batteries:

  • Only charge the batteries when the charge gauge level is down in the 20% – 30% range.
  • Check the water level regularly and do not let the water level fall below the plates.
  • Fill batteries with distilled water only and do not overfill.  Fill approx 1/2-inch below the fill cap recess.  Overfilling the batteries will cause them to leak and boil over when charging.  This will start corroding cables, connections, and the frame.  (We have fill jugs that allow for proper filling.)
  • Do not let the batteries fully discharge.  When the cart is stored or not used in the winter, you must keep the batteries charged or stored at a temperature above freezing.  A discharged battery can freeze and crack when the temperature is below freezing.
  • Keep the top of your batteries and connections clean.  If you notice corrosion on the battery connections, then clean the connections and apply a terminal protective coating.
  • If your battery voltage drops below approx 32 volts, then the factory chargers will not kick on, and you will have to manually charge the batteries to get the voltage above 32 volts in order for the charger to start charging.  (We offer a battery maintainer and a battery charger with a built-in maintainer that will maintain a completely charged set of batteries to a full charge and will charge batteries that have been completely discharged.)
