The company was initially founded by Everett and Clinton Cushman in 1901 in Lincoln, Nebraska. It began as a gasoline motor manufacturer, although they decided to leave the business in 1919. The new owner, Charles Ammon, started producing motorized scooters in 1936.
By the late 1950s, the company was ready to introduce its three-wheeled and four-wheeled car designs. Several celebrity golfers invested in their own customized Cushman golf carts, which included famous names such as Frank Sinatra, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Bob Hope.
As time went on, the company worked on improving its lineup. Eventually, they designed a range of gas and electric models to meet customers’ needs. The golf cart lineup was retired in 1975, but they continued to produce industrial vehicles.
The company was purchased by Ransomes, Ltd. in 1989. A mere nine years later, Textron took over. To this day, Cushman utility vehicles are still being manufactured by Textron’s Jacobsen Golf & Turf Products division. If you were hoping to score a vintage golf cart model in good condition, there are plenty of options when you browse the pre-owned market.
One of the most iconic Cushman golf carts was the three-wheeled “Meter Maid,” which was often used as a small municipal vehicle for patrols writing parking tickets. These vehicles were produced for many years. Then there’s the Scotsman model, which was highly versatile, with the ability to reach up to 12 miles per hour. It could also double as a dump truck with an add-on dump bed. Another popular choice was the Cushman Combo. This vehicle had a seat that could flip down to accommodate additional riders. Alternatively, it could be flipped up to make more room for golf bags or other equipment.
